As hurricane season approaches, we as homeowners all turn a watchful eye to the weather channel. Local news agencies begin what is commonly referred to as “hurricane preparedness” campaigns. While most certainly necessary, these campaigns are focused on survival preparedness. The most prominent channel in my area actually calls their campaign a “hurricane survival guide”.

Well, if you are like me, I would like to do more than just survive! After seeing the aftermath of ”Florence” in my community, the widespread devastation, and the amount of time it took to recover, I thought to myself “There must be a better way!”. “There must be a way to endure a major storm without suffering as much damage to our homes and therefore less interruption to our lives.”

As you can see, this only part one of a multi-week blog that will continue into hurricane season with the goal of educating homeowners on the finer points of hurricane ”proofing” our homes. We will also focus on ways to make investing into your property’s longevity affordable and sustainable.

Some of the subjects of each weeks blogs will include:

Proper Tree Care BEFORE a Storm (Part 2)-

High winds lead to downed trees which can be a major source of property damage or personal injury during a hurricane.

This segment will help you create a plan for healthy, stronger trees which will in turn reduce your chances of sustaining major damage to your home. We will also discuss safety tips to help avoid injury when a significant weather event is taking place.

Reducing Drainage Hazards Around Your Home (Part 3)- Flooding during a storm can cause significant property damage. There are small observations and improvements that can help you reduce your home‘s susceptibility to flooding. This segment will help.

Improving Your Home’s Durability (Parts 4, 5, & 6)- There are ways to increase your home’s likelihood of enduring a major hurricane with little to no damage. The best part of this process? It can mean beautification of your home, while at the same time making it more durable in high winds and rain. There are also many ways to receive insurance premium reductions, tax incentives, and manufacturers rebates to help offset the costs. In this segment, we will discuss roofing systems, hurricane windows, storm shutters, and exterior products.

Whole Home Battery Backup Systems (Part 7)-

The are several whole home back up systems (generators) on the market that will provide you with piece of mind during a hurricane. My home was without power for nearly 4 weeks after Florence. Fortunately, I had my home powered by a generator system and my house was operating as normal. The systems can be a little expensive but will more than pay for themselves over time.

Help! My home was damaged in a storm! (Part 8)- This will be a resource and information guide to navigating home repairs and insurance claims. The best way to get your home repaired quickly and efficiently after a disaster event.
